There has been a sharp rise in attacks of extreme magnitude. While CURATOR recorded no incidents exceeding 1 Tbps in intensity during the first nine months of 2024, one such attack occurred in 2025, and the number of such cases reached 20 in 2026.
Financial organizations also faced exceptionally long-lasting attacks. The longest incident of the second quarter lasted 79.9 hours, while in the third quarter, one banking organization was subjected to a DDoS attack for 200 hours. The previous record from 2025 stood at 119.2 hours.
At the same time, the majority of attacks became shorter. The average duration dropped from 2,764 to 1,571 seconds, and the median duration fell from 150 to 120 seconds. This indicates that alongside a large volume of short attacks, threat actors are simultaneously conducting isolated, extremely long campaigns against specific targets.
The share of multi-vector DDoS attacks in the third quarter declined to 6.8%, down from 11.7% in the second quarter and 8% in 2025. Attacks simultaneously targeting network layers (L3–L4) and the application layer (L7) accounted for 4.1% of all recorded incidents.
CURATOR attributes the intensified pressure on the financial sector to the high cost associated with even brief downtime for banks, payment services, and brokerage or trading platforms. Prolonged attacks also demonstrate that attackers may rely not only on sudden spikes in load but also on the gradual exhaustion of defensive infrastructure. According to the company's assessment, it is no longer sufficient for businesses to base their strategies on average figures from previous years; protection systems must be capable of withstanding both extreme traffic peaks and attacks lasting several days.
